H. Rider Haggard

Sir Henry Rider Haggard was born on 22 June 1856 in Norfolk, England. As a young man, he travelled to southern Africa and worked in the British colonial administration. His experiences with the region’s landscapes, cultures, history, and political events later became an important influence on his fiction.After returning to England, Haggard studied law but gradually devoted himself to writing. He achieved international recognition with King Solomon’s Mines, published in 1885, which introduced the adventurer Allan Quatermain. His novel She further established his reputation through its blend of exploration, mythology, romance, mystery, and supernatural adventure.Haggard wrote numerous novels, short stories, and nonfiction works throughout his career. Beyond literature, he took a serious interest in agriculture, land reform, and conditions affecting rural communities. He was knighted for his public service and literary contribution. Haggard died on 14 May 1925, leaving a lasting influence on adventure, fantasy, and lost-world fiction.
